Edwards County High School
Driver Education Department
Course Description, Guidelines and Procedures:
Course prerequisite:
Any school district which maintains grades 9 through
12 shall offer a driver education course in any such school which it operates. Each student attending any public or
non-public high school in the district must receive a passing grade in at least
8 courses during the previous 2 semesters prior to enrolling in a driver
education course, or the student shall not be permitted to enroll in the
course...(Illinois School Code 105 ILCS 5/27-24.2).
Fee:
The district may charge a reasonable fee to students
who participate in a driver education course approved in accordance with this
Part...(23 Illinois Administrative Code Ch. I, S. 252.30). Edwards County High School charges a fee of
$40 for the driver education course.
Course guidelines:
The driver education course offered in its school
shall consist of at least 30 clock hours of classroom instruction and at least
6 hours of practice driving in a car having dual operating controls under
direct individual instruction.
(Illinois School Code 105 ILCS 5/27-24.3).
The course will include the basic written exam. Upon successful completion of the course,
the student will then apply for the instructional permit (white slip). See attached sample copy of instructional
permit application.
Instructional Permit (white slip):
The instruction permit must be used in the driver
education class when an adult instructor is sitting beside the student. Students may also practice their driving
when a parent, legal guardian or a responsible adult age 21 or over approved of
by your parents is sitting beside the student.
The adult must have a license for the type of vehicle you are driving
and must have at least one year of driving experience. The instructional permit is valid for 24
months and must be held for a minimum of 3 months before a license is
granted. The instructional permit has a
$20 charge made payable to the Secretary of State.
Driving:
Each student must complete the behind-the-wheel
curriculum (attached copy of behind-the-wheel curriculum). The curriculum consists of 6 hours of
behind-the-wheel instruction and an additional 25 clock hours of
practice driving with a parent/guardian or responsible adult.
High school students who successfully complete an
accredited driver education course of classroom and behind-the-wheel
instruction with a grade of A or B may not be required to take a duplicate road
test at the time they apply for their driver’s license.
Certificate of Completion (blue slip):
When
you have successfully completed the behind-the-wheel portion of driver
education, the Illinois State Board of Education or Secretary of State’s Office
will issue a “Certificate of Completion” (blue slip). See attached sample copy of a “Certificate of Completion” (blue
slip).
The “blue slip” will allow you to continue to
practice your driving until your 16th birthday (at that time you are
eligible to receive your driver’s license).
You may practice your driving when one of your parents, a legal guardian
or a responsible adult approved of by your parents is sitting beside you. The adult must have a license for the type
of vehicle you are driving and must have at least one year of driving
experience.
A sample copy of the “blue
slip” is attached to this packet.
Instructions to obtain a driver’s license:
The instructions to obtain a license will vary
depending on the driver education course grade (both sets of instructions are
attached to this packet).
Edwards County High School participates in the
Cooperative Driver Testing Program.
This means a student driver who receives a grade of an A or B can take
the Illinois Road Test or Driving Test with his/her instructor (and will
receive a “Cooperative Driver Testing Program” Certificate – see attached
sample copy). A grade of C or D will
result in not only the Road Test with the instructor, but a duplicate road test
at the facility.
