NOTE:  It is important to remember that when a student is taking HED 442s as an ILP course or distance learning course, where the entire time is spent working with a Master Driver Education Teacher with on-street and driving simulation instruction (except in situations where the public school does not have driving simulators and then the student will work with the instructor of HED 442s in gaining  the teaching experiences in driving simulation).

Roles and Responsibilities of Master Teacher working with Students in HED 442s

This information was developed to help Driver Education Master Teachers (the term Master Teacher will also be used) whom work with students enrolled in HED 442s.   The basic role of the Master Teacher is to supervise, guide, and evaluate the assigned student teacher in order to assist with the development of her/his driver education teaching skills.

Requirements of Effective Master Teacher

1.     Minimum of five (5) years of successful driver education teaching experience.

2.     Fully certified or endorsed in driver education in the state where currently teaching.

3.     Is recommended by the student wanting to work with the Master Teacher and is approved by the instructor of HED 443s.

4.     Knows and practices the standards and curriculum of driver education in the state where she/he teaches.

5.     Keeps abreast of new driver education knowledge and procedures, new driver education teaching techniques, and uses contemporary knowledge and skills in teaching driver education.

6.     Is willing to work extra hours to accommodate the HED 442s students in their teaching experiences.

7.     The Master driver education teacher who agrees to work with HED 442s students must send to the instructor of HED 442s an email message (safety@siu.edu) indicating his/her willingness to work with the HED 442s student, to provide evaluations of HED 442s student’s driver education teaching abilities, and to provide a statement relating to items 1-5 above.  The Master driver education teacher must also send a copy of his/her resume or curriculum vitae to the instructor (safety@siu.edu) for his final approval.  The instructor of HED 442s does have final approval on the person who will work with the student in teaching laboratory driver education).

8.     The Master Driver Education Teacher must assist in completing the agreement form between SIUC and the school district in which he/she works.  This form must be completed before any work is done between the Master Driver Education Teacher and the student.

Preparing for HED 442s Students

The time and care that the Master Teacher spends in preparation for the HED 442s student’s arrival will pay great dividends in effectively providing a good learning atmosphere for the students and communicating the expectations for their performance.

The Master Teacher must obtain copies of materials, such as school driver education handouts, driver education textbooks, etc., to help assist the HED 442s student in teaching driver education.

Prepare a draft of a tentative timetable of experiences for the HED 442s student for the entire period of their experiences (observation, teaching small groups, whole group instruction for one lesson, whole group instruction for multiple days, etc.).  A copy of the tentative schedule MUST be provided to the instructor of HED 442s and must be approved by the instructor of HED 442s before the student is allowed to start the observation/teaching experiences with the Master Teacher.

Identify units of work for which the HED 442s student may assume initial responsibility.  Remember that the HED 442s student will be working with beginning drivers from the start of their laboratory (on-street and driving simulation) experiences.

Supervising a HED 442s student

The Master Teacher provides the most insightful supervision of the HED 442s student’s behavior.  In addition to general observation and feedback regarding the HED 442s student’s behavior, it is expected that the Master Teacher will consistently use clinical supervision techniques which involves observing and recording the HED 442s student’s performance, providing specific feedback, and engaging in collaborative conference discussions in order to enhance growth in the HED 442s student’s driver education teaching skills.  In order to facilitate this, the Master Teacher may wish to keep a journal of the HED 442s student’s performance and should require that the HED 442s student also keep a daily journal.  A copy of this journal MUST be provided to the instructor of HED 442s.

The Master Teacher should conference with HED 442s student and should provide oral and/or written feedback daily.  Conference topics will depend upon the needs of the HED 442s student and the laboratory situation.

Observation of the Master Teacher’s Classroom or Laboratory Situation by the HED 442s Student

Most of the HED 442s student’s activities during the first few days will consist of observation to learn about the Master Teacher’s teaching style and about the students in the class.  This will also be the beginning of learning driver education knowledge from the Master Teacher.

Increasing the HED 442s Student’s Responsibility

The level of responsibility for teaching should increase as the Master Teacher feels that the HED 442s student is ready.  Remember that some HED 442s students are “brand new” at teaching, while others may have had some previous teaching experiences.

Student Teaching Requirements for Students enrolled in HED 442s as a ILP or distance learning course

Students enrolled in HED 442s as an ILP or distance learning are taking about 100% of the course online of the course observing and teaching driver education in a public school.  The course syllabus and special content areas/topics of HED 442s are shown on the course Web site:

http://www.siu.edu/~ritzel/courses/442s/index.htm

The administration rules and regulations of driver education requirements are specified in the course syllabus and the HED 442s students must review and complete these requirements.

For the driver education classroom part of HED 442s, the HED 442s student must complete the following requirements in regards to teaching driver education laboratory program in cooperation with the Master Driver Education Teacher:

1.                             The HED 442s student must not start the laboratory teaching work until the start of the semester and after the student’s application and SIUC/Public School agreement form has been completed when enrolled in HED 442s.  The student must have also purchased the course materials required for HED 442s.

2.                             The HED 442s student must spend at least one week observing the Master Teacher teaching driver education before they are permitted to teach any mini or full teaching period lesson.

3.                             If the public school where arrangement have made with a Master Teacher has a driving simulation system as part of its laboratory program in driver education, then the HED 442s student must teach three (3) to four (4) different driving simulation lessons during the semester that they are with the Master Teacher.  The HED 442s student must observe all other driving simulation lessons taught.  The HED 442s student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for the 3-4 driving simulation lessons.  A draft copy of the lesson plan must be shared with and approved by the Master Teacher at least one week days before the scheduled time to teach the driving simulation lesson.  A final copy of the lesson plan must be signed by the Master Teacher and submitted to the instructor of HED 442s within one week after teaching each driving simulation lesson.  The instructor of HED 442s has the right to reject any lesson plan that does not meet the requirements of a lesson plan as specified in the course materials.  In case of rejection, the HED 442s student must make any and all appropriate corrections.  The Master Teacher can use the Evaluation Instrument for Driving Simulation Teaching form to assess the driving simulation teaching of the HED 442s student.

4.                             If the public school where the Master Teacher is located does not have a driving simulation system as a part of their laboratory program in driver education, then the HED 442s student must meet with the instructor of HED 442s on 3-5 different dates as determined by the instructor of HED 442s during the semester in order to learn about teaching driving simulation and the driving simulation equipment used at the Safety Center, must review on their own time all 11 driving simulation laserdiscs (the lessons can be provided the student in a DVD format) that are used at the Safety Center, and then teach 3-4 driving simulation lessons.  The student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for 3-4 of the 11 driving simulation lessons.  A draft copy of the lesson plans must be shared with the instructor of HED 442s one week before the actual teaching of the lessons.  A copy of each lesson plan developed will be provided others in the course (whom are enrolled in an ILP format during the semester enrolled, which can be from 0-? other students) and two (2) copies provided for the instructor of HED 442s.  The format and sample lesson plans are located in the course material packet.

5.                             Teach at least five (5) beginning students (if the HED 442s student and the Master Teacher agree to have the HED 442s more than 5 beginning drivers, then this information needs to be made available to the instructor of HED 442s) how to drive on-street at a local high school from the first day of their instruction to the last day (it is the responsibility of the HED 442s student to show to the instructor of HED 4442s, and signed by the Master Teacher, that the HED 442s student provided each of the five beginning drivers with at least 6 hours of laboratory (6 hours on on-street or appropriate hours of driving simulation and remainder hours in on-street instruction).   After having a plan on the total number of lessons to be taught to each student on-street, the student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for 5 different lessons taught with these five (5) beginning drivers.  An outline of the other lessons taught must be developed.  The HED 442s student and the instructor of HED 442s will agree as to the lesson plans developed after the HED 442s student and the Master Teacher reaches such agreement.  The student will use the guidelines of the other lessons taught with the beginning drivers as are identified in the HED 442s course materials book.  The lesson plans are to be discussed with the Master Teacher in the local high school each day one is present.  The HED 442s does not have to develop a lesson plan for all lessons taught to the five (5) beginning drivers, however, as stated earlier, they must have at least an outline of the other lessons.  Essential items to be included in the lesson plans are analyzed on the Format Sheet and the Things to Consider” in the Course Material Packet.  A description of the specific route used in each lesson (where lesson plans are required and where they are not required) is required.  Copies of the routes must also be approved by the Master Teacher prior for all lesson taught on street.  This route should be shared with the Master Teacher at the local high school and will be submitted to your HED 442s instructor.  The instructor of HED 442s has the right to reject any lesson plan that does not meet the requirements of a lesson plan as specified in the course materials.  In case of rejection, the HED 442s student must make any and all appropriate corrections.

6.                             Each student teacher will be comprehensively evaluated by the Master Teacher a minimum of two (2) times for on-street teaching situations for each of the five (5) beginning drivers taught by the student teacher at the local high school and in all driving simulation lessons taught (by the Master Teacher, if the school has driving simulation as a part of their driver education program or by the instructor of HED 442s if the local school does not have a driving simulation system as a part of their laboratory program).   Be prepared and allow time for the Master Teacher to discuss his/her assessment after the lesson is taught.   The Master Teacher should send his/her assessment to the instructor of HED 442s as soon as possible.  The instructor of HED 442s can provide a copy of a driving simulation teaching evaluation form and an on-street teaching evaluation form to the Master Teacher.  After reviewing the each teaching session with the HED 442s student, the Master Teacher must submit the completed evaluation forms to the instructor of HED 442s as soon as possible after the teaching/evaluation date.
