Course Objectives: At the completion of this course the successful student teacher will:

1.  Relate the positive benefits and the need for driver education and traffic safety in American Society.

2.  Develop and display an enthusiastic and sincere personal philosophy as to the value of driver education.

3.  Possess the knowledge and skills to teach beginning drivers in either a high school, commercial or fleet safety setting.

4.  For on-street and driving simulation phases of driver education gain experiences in resource materials, lessons plan development, learning activities strategies, and teaching methods.

5.  Obtain practical experiences in the classroom, on street and driving simulation phases of driver education.

The Requirements of the Student enrolled in HED 442s

1.      Very Important - The student must have completed the application for Driver Education Student Teaching Experience and must work with the public school where the student wants to teach the laboratory program (on-street and driving simulation) to complete the Agreement for Placement of Driver Education Student Teaching Experience by Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

  1. Buy required course materials for HED 442s at The Printing Plant, 606 S. Illinois Avenue, Carbondale, IL 62901 (1.618.529.3115) or the SIUC Bookstore.  There are two different volumes in the course materials.  The first one deals with the details of on-street, driving simulation, and multiple-car driving range programs, including lesson plan development, lesson plan examples, specific guidelines for teaching, manuals for teaching driving simulation, driving range experiences, and specific driver education laboratory topics.  The second resource is the material developed by William Anderson titled In-car Instruction, the best material ever written on on-street/in-car instruction.  This must be done by the first Wednesday in the semester enrolled.  The student needs to indicate to the instructor of HED 442s that they have purchased this material and either show in person or send a scanned or digital picture of the front cover to safety@siu.edu .

  1. The student wanting to enroll in HED 442s will have to make initial arrangements with a Driver Education Master Teacher at a public high school to teach both driving simulation and on-street.  Teacher’s name, address, telephone number, FAX number, and email address must be provided to instructor of HED 442s.  The instructor of HED 442s will make final decision as to acceptability of Driver Education Master Teacher’s participation in working with HED 442s student in off-campus situation before the student can start any activity.  Very Important -The student cannot start the learning/teaching activities with the Master Teacher until the first day of the semester enrolled and until after the SIUC/Public School agreement form has been signed and approved.

  1. If the public school where arrangement have made with a Master Teacher has a driving simulation system as part of its laboratory program in driver education, then the HED 442s student must teach three (3) to four (4) different driving simulation lessons during the semester that they are with the Master Teacher.  The HED 442s student must observe all other driving simulation lessons taught.  The HED 442s student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for the 3-4 driving simulation lessons.  A draft copy of the lesson plan must be shared with and approved by the Master Teacher at least one week days before the scheduled time to teach the driving simulation lesson.  A final copy of the lesson plan must be signed by the Master Teacher and submitted to the instructor of HED 442s within one week after teaching each driving simulation lesson.  The instructor of HED 442s has the right to reject any lesson plan that does not meet the requirements of a lesson plan as specified in the course materials.  In case of rejection, the HED 442s student must make any and all appropriate corrections.  The Master Teacher can use the Evaluation Instrument for Driving Simulation Teaching form to assess the driving simulation teaching of the HED 442s student.

If the public school where the Master Teacher is located does not have a driving simulation system as a part of their laboratory program in driver education, then the HED 442s student must meet with the instructor of HED 442s on 3-5 different dates as determined by the instructor of HED 442s during the semester in order to learn about teaching driving simulation and the driving simulation equipment used at the Safety Center, must review on their own time all 11 driving simulation laserdiscs (the lessons can be provided the student in a DVD format) that are used at the Safety Center, and then teach 3-4 driving simulation lessons.  The student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for 3-4 of the 11 driving simulation lessons.  A draft copy of the lesson plans must be shared with the instructor of HED 442s one week before the actual teaching of the lessons.  A copy of each lesson plan developed will be provided others in the course (whom are enrolled in an ILP format during the semester enrolled, which can be from 0-? other students) and two (2) copies provided for the instructor of HED 442s.  The format and sample lesson plans are located in the course material packet.

  1. Teach at least five (5) beginning students (if the HED 442s student and the Master Teacher agree to have the HED 442s teach more than 5 beginning drivers, then this information needs to be made available to the instructor of HED 442s) how to drive on-street at a local high school from the first day of their instruction to the last day (it is the responsibility of the HED 442s student to show to the instructor of HED 4442s, and signed by the Master Teacher, that the HED 442s student provided each of the five beginning drivers with at least 6 hours of laboratory (6 hours on on-street or appropriate hours of driving simulation and remainder hours in on-street instruction).   After having a plan on the total number of lessons to be taught to each student on-street, the student will develop comprehensive lesson plans for 5 different lessons taught with these five (5) beginning drivers.  An outline of the other lessons taught must be developed.  The HED 442s student and the instructor of HED 442s will agree as to the lesson plans developed after the HED 442s student and the Master Teacher reaches such agreement.  The student will use the guidelines of the other lessons taught with the beginning drivers as are identified in the HED 442s course materials book.  The lesson plans are to be discussed with the Master Teacher in the local high school each day one is present.  The HED 442s does not have to develop a lesson plan for all lessons taught to the five (5) beginning drivers; however, as stated earlier, they must have at least an outline of the other lessons.  Essential items to be included in the lesson plans are analyzed on the Format Sheet and the Things to Consider” in the Course Material Packet.  A description of the specific route used in each lesson (where lesson plans are required and where they are not required) is required.  Copies of the routes must also be approved by the Master Teacher prior for all lesson taught on street.  This route should be shared with the Master Teacher at the local high school and will be submitted to your HED 442s instructor.  The instructor of HED 442s has the right to reject any lesson plan that does not meet the requirements of a lesson plan as specified in the course materials.  In case of rejection, the HED 442s student must make any and all appropriate corrections.

  1. Each student teacher will be comprehensively evaluated by the Master Teacher a minimum of two (2) times for on-street teaching situations for each of the five (5) beginning drivers taught by the student teacher at the local high school and in all driving simulation lessons taught (by the Master Teacher, if the school has driving simulation as a part of their driver education program or by the instructor of HED 442s if the local school does not have a driving simulation system as a part of their laboratory program).   Be prepared and allow time for the Master Teacher to discuss his/her assessment after the lesson is taught.   The Master Teacher should send his/her assessment to the instructor of HED 442s as soon as possible.  The instructor of HED 442s can provide a copy of a driving simulation teaching evaluation form and an on-street teaching evaluation form to the Master Teacher.  After reviewing the each teaching session with the HED 442s student, the Master Teacher must submit the completed evaluation forms to the instructor of HED 442s as soon as possible after the teaching/evaluation date.

  1. Each student will have a experience with the instructor of HED 442s with the multiple-car driving range program.  This experience will over parts of 3-5 days at the SIUC Safety Center driving facility, 1435 Douglas Drive, SIUC campus.

  1. Each student teacher will develop a “notebook” containing lesson plans and various other driver and traffic safety education handouts pertaining to driver education laboratory instruction.  It must have dividers for ease of use and separate of the various driver education lesson plans (driving simulation and on street).  This “notebook is due the Friday before the final examination week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  All notebooks will be returned to the HED 442s student.
