CAUSES OF INJURY

Abnormal energy transfers or interference with energy transfers.

--          Mechanical energy

Transferred either by moving objects such as bullets, knives, and falling timber or by impacts of moving people against relatively stationary surfaces such as windshields and stairs.

--          Thermal energy, electrical energy and ionizing radiation

                        Burns, electrocutions, radiation damage.

--          Chemicals

                        Chemical burns and poisonings

Some injuries result from interference with normal body energy exchanges, notably oxygen utilization and thermo-regulation

--          Drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning

--          Freezing

FUNDAMENTAL TASK IN INJURY RISK CONTROL

1.                  Prevent agents from reaching people in amounts or at rates that exceed injury thresholds.

2.                  Minimize the consequences of injury.
