HED 302s

Reading Assignments

The Web site HED 302s Web based learning course is now available for those students enrolled to start.  You can access this course by going to my main Web site at http://ritzel.siu.edu and "clicking" on Course, then after going to the list of courses "click" on HED 302s.  When starting in the course, please read carefully the course outline, course assignments and reading list.  You will note that you are responsible for obtaining three curricula:

State of Washington Driver Education Curriculum

Starting Fall semester 2007, the curriculum will be available at the following Web site:  http://www.k12.wa.us/TrafficSafety/TSEguide.aspx .  If you want to purchase the curriculum it will be available at The Printing Plant, 606 S. Illinois, Carbondale, IL 62901, (telephone- 1.618.529.3115) or the SIUC Bookstore for about $65.00.

        Perceptive Driver

order from Safety Enterprises

PO Box 208

Binghamton, NY 13904

Or email at safetyenterpris2@aol.com (this seems to be the quick way to get the book)

This book will cost you about $8.00

Responsible Driving by the AAA and Glencoe

Purchase from the SIU Bookstore or any other book source.  Get student edition, soft cover – about $30.00; hard cover – about $50.00

Send me an email message (safety@siu.edu) when you download or purchase the State of Washington Driver Education Curriculum, purchase and receive the Perceptive Driver book, and purchase the AAA textbook Responsible Driving.

You need to also download the Illinois Driver Education Curriculum and the AAA Novice Driver Education Model Curriculum . Print out a copy of these curricula and indicated to safety@siu.edu when you have done this.

When you get to the beginning of the Foundations of Effective Driving topic, you will find at the end of the topic it is indicated that you are to review the 6 video units of the Perception of Driving Hazards program developed by Dr. Jack Weaver (video used with permission of Dr. Weaver).  These videos and the final video test can be seen at http://www.kittle.siu.edu/ritzel/302s/.  The videos are in both the .wmv and .mpg formats.  For most of you it is best to use the .wmv format.  You can use the score sheet to record your responses to the driver performance test II and send to safety@siu.edu.  The 6 video units must be viewed and studied before one can take the video test (if you do not view and study the 6 units you will probably not do as well on the video test).

Please indicate at anytime if you have any questions.  I do spend a lot of time on the computer and will always try to get back to you within 24 hours.

Read the pages indicated when you are studying the topic on the Internet.  The pages indicated for the Washington Traffic Safety Education Guide reflect both the Module and the page number in the Module.  For example 1.7–1.9 indicates that you should read Module 1, pages 7 through 9.

Besides columns of reading for the three (3) main books (the Washington TSE Guide and Quensel’s Perceptive Driver, and the AAA Responsible Driving book) for the course, I have also indicated other required readings.   Review the course assignment materials to determine whom you contact to purchase the Washington TSE Guide, Perceptive Driver, and Responsible Driving.

NDEMC is the Novice Driver Education Model Curriculum for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (the page numbers for you to read are shown) (you must download this at http://www.aaafoundation.org/resources/index.cfm?button=lonaro).

The SBE-DE is the driver education units from the Illinois State Board of Education (the unit numbers are shown).  The NDEMC and SBE-DE materials will be provided to you by the Instructor by contacting him at safety@siu.edu and indicating your name and address.
